Helping to feed Mansfield’s homeless at winter time
The Sunday Hot Meal Project for the homeless in Mansfield will run through until March thanks to funding from district and county councillors.
Volunteers John Coxhead and Lynne Cooper hope the scheme will be able to continue for several years.
The homeless can now enjoy a hot meal on Sundays at the Sherwood Street Day Centre in Mansfield.
Lynne, who also volunteers at the Beacon Centre - a Christian-based outreach project of St John’s Church - says there is an issue with homelessness in the area.
She said that the Sunday project will allow people on the streets to get a hot meal in the colder months, reaching out to the most vulnerable people in our society.
The project takes place in Framework’s Sherwood Street Day Centre in Mansfield, 1.30-3pm each Sunday.
Co Coun Chris Winterton has continued to support the project and says that homelessness in Mansfield is an increasing problem.
He added: “We must pull together County and District resources to help tackle homelessness in the town.”
Coun Winterton is pictured left with Lynne Cooper, volunteer cook Lee Hall and John Coxhead in the kitchen at the Sherwood Street centre.
