High speed line to stop near Ilkeston

There will be a station on a proposed high speed line just five miles outside of Ilkeston, a national newspaper has claimed.
Phase two of the controversial HS2 line from London, splits in a ‘Y’ shape at Birmingham, with one branch heading to Manchester and the other going to Leeds.
On the Leeds branch, the first of just three stops will be at a new East Midlands Parkway station at Toton Sidings, according to the Sunday Times.
Nottingham and Derby councils had hoped for a city centre station but the Toton stop could spell good news for our area, according to Erewash MP Jessica Lee.
“If that route is confirmed, it’s definitely a positive thing for the area,” she said. “It puts us on the map in terms of a fast route to London, it’s good for employment and obviously transport links.”
Miss Lee is waiting for confirmation from the Government that the line, mooted to be opened in 2033, will not effect plans to open a train station in Ilkeston by 2014.
But retired railway worker Brian Beer has concerns about the effect the line, which will see trains travelling at up to 250mph up the Erewash Valley could have on the countryside.
“It could be extremely noisy –they will have to spend a fortune on acoustic fencing,” he said. “And the effect on the countryside would be disastrous.”
The Department of Transport has said that an official announcement could be made this month.
