Housing plan for Long Eaton stadium
A PRIMARY school has welcomed a plan to include an open space in its proposal to build 142 homes on the land of the former Long Eaton speedway stadium.
The Station Road stadium, which was also used for greyhound racing, closed in 1997 and has been partly demolished.
Headteacher of Grange Primary School Mike Hannon said children currently have to travel about a quarter of a mile to the school playing field at Long Eaton United Football Club, which has no toilet facilities and is not accessible in bad weather.
In the current proposal for the speedway stadium, there would be an open space right next to the school.
"When the original application went in we were slightly concerned that it was the only opportunity to have an open space next to the school," said Mr Hannon.
"The local community has been working extremely actively in the past few months to encourage the planners to look at that and got 4,000 signatures on a petition.
"Now that the consultation has taken place, I am confident that, if the planning committee gives its permission, this will benefit the school and the local community."
An application from Stolkin Properties to re-open the stadium for racing was turned down in 2006
The London-based developers was then granted outline permission to use the site for residential purposes but turned down an application to build 125 houses because it failed to provide enough affordable houses or transport access.
This latest application has been lodged by Leicester-based Davidson Developments.
The plans are available to view here.
