Ilkeston Canalside residents’ worry over safety of new build
An Ilkeston woman fears for the safety of residents if a house is built on a narrow strip of land between the Erewash Canal and river.
Nadine Protheroe, 52, is worried that the new house will mean more parked cars on a single track tow path down which cars cannot pass each other and make access for emergency vehicles difficult.
Erewash planning committee members approved plans for the three or four bedroomed house on the private road just off Awsworth Road during a meeting last week.
The front part of the site has been used by residents of the five properties lining the narrow street as a turning circle.
And although a small turning circle is proposed as part of the development residents fear it would be too narrow for emergency vehicles.
“It’s safety I’m worried about,” said the nurse and mother-of-one. “Will emergency vehicles be able to get down the road if something happens.
“And if we cannot park on the tow path we have to walk down an unsafe area in the dark, believe you me, that is not a nice walk.”
Mrs Protheroe said residents were concerned that the new house may increase the risk of flooding from the canal and river to their own properties.
There are four mature horse chestnut trees at the rear of the site and the householders fear the occupier of any house on he site would have to prune their branches substantially.
Householder David Reek said during the Erewash committee meeting that plans may be hazardous to the bird life, including Kingfishers and Jays, which inhabit the site.
Mr Reek said: “My garden has been flooded four times this year. If the plans go through the water will be in the house.”
An agent acting on behalf of the applicant said the development would reduce the number of anglers parking on the access road and an ecological report stated there was no risk to wildlife.
