Kids help to design new £90k playpark

It’s been a fantastic week for three of the area’s leisure centres this week, which have benefitted from more than £130,000 of funding.

Ilkeston’s Rutland Recreation Ground, home to the town’s running track, has received the lion’s share with a £90,000 grant for a new outdoor play area.

Equipment will be for youngsters of all ages to enjoy, including children with disabilities.

Pupils, staff and parents at Bennerley Fields special school in Cotmanhay have been picked to involved in every aspect of the project, including the final design, before it is up and running in time for the summer.

Headteacher Debbie Gerring said: “It’s a really exciting project.

“And what I am really delighted about is that Bennerley Fields pupils will bring their thoughts and ideas from the perspective of children with special educational needs.”

Erewash Borough Council applied for the grant from the Aiming High fund from Derbyshire County Council for projects for disabled children.

Welcoming the news this week, Cllr Mike Wallis, the lead member for culture and leisure, said the play park would increase the appeal of the Rutland Rec’ as a ‘fun, family place to go’.

“It is a great, central location,” he said.

“It has a car park and the site already has a range of other sports facilities.

“We believe adding this new play park is an ideal opportunity to make Rutland a central hub for sport and play that has access for all – improving, especially, the play facilities for young people with disabilities and additional needs.”

New paths will link in to the current walkways through the park and a low fence will surround the play area.

There will also be a new picnic bench and special seating for disabled people will be installed.
