Kids remember rector
Children open Scargill's box
SCHOOLCHILDREN from village schools in and around West Hallam gave their own special gifts in memory of a church rector whose will has benefited them.
This year marks the 350th anniversary of John Scargill’s death who left provision in his will to provide money every year to help village kids.
Last Tuesday there was a thanksgiving service at St Wilfrid’s Church in which children performed a play in memory of the great man and showed a multimedia presentation.
They were also given a chance to look in the strong box, in which Scargill ordered school papers to be kept.
Scargill, who died in 1662, left money in his will to buy a farm in Eastwood, the rents from which maintained Scargill School in West Hallam and provide 12 scholarships from the village, Dale Abbey, Stanley, Stanley Common and Mapperley.
