A Kirk Hallam pub landlord has slammed licensing authorities after being told to close a youth club he set up to kerb anti-social behaviour.

Nottingham Castle licensee Trevor Davie decided to start the club after repeated arson attacks on his premises.

He invited the youths to use the pub’s pool room, which serves no alcohol and is separate from the rest of the premises, to keep them off the streets.

But just before Christmas he received notification from a police licensing officer that unless the club was closed he would be prosecuted.

He said: “They are not being a nuisance and they aren’t hanging around the shops any more.

“They even tidy up after themselves before they go.”

Licensing laws state anyone under the age of 16 has to be off licensed premises by 9pm and must be supervised by an adult at all times.

Trevor said he had adhered to these rules by recruiting parents to watch over youngsters while in the pub and closing the club at 9pm.

He said: “It would be OK if there was something else being provided but there is nothing for them around here.”

An Erewash Borough Council spokesman said Derbyshire police’s licensing team was working to resolve anti-social behaviour in the area.
