Live grenade found in attic

A bomb-disposal team was called out after a live grenade was found in the loft of a house in Long Eaton.

The shocking discovery was made at the property on Roosevelt Avenue on Monday (February 4).

A woman found the grenade while clearing out the attic of her late father-in-law’s property.

An emergency 100-yard cordon was put up around the house and nearby homes had to be evacuated.

It has emerged that the man who lived at the property used to be in the Army .

The pin was still in the grenade but the explosives team based at Chilwell were called in.

They were on their way back from Somercotes Infant School, near Ripley, where they had been dealing with reports of a smoke grenade in the car park.

Experts with the explosives team say it was impossible to tell how old the grenade was.

It was taken away and a controlled explosion carried out in a nearby park.

No-one was injured and residents were allowed back into their homes by 11.55 am — less than two hours after the alarm had been raised at 10 am.
