The application to win the remaining funding for a new train station at Ilkeston has been sent to the Government.

The deadline for the New Stations Fund, announced by Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin in January, was Monday.

Before it sent off its application, Derbyshire County Council has approved an additional £754,000 towards the £5m project in Ilkeston.

The total cash promised for the station is now more than £2.75m – well over the 25 per cent that the Government has said needs to be allocated before it would consider funding the rest of the project.

Ilkeston’s bid appears to fulfil the rest of the criteria laid out by Mr McLoughlin, including having the support of local rail operators.

In the council’s latest report to cabinet on the station they say that Northern Rial, which would have services stopping at Ilkeston, has made a ‘clear statement’ of its ‘willingness to add Ilkeston to its stopping pattern’.

The ‘Tiser has played a key role in the station campaign and hope the dream could become a reality by the end of March.
