The trust in charge of two academies in Ilkeston, set to merge on one site, has revealed plans for a new multi-million pound building.

Before the controversial merger between Ormiston’s Ilkeston and Enterprise academies was given the go -ahead, the trust was granted £7.4m by the Government to improve the Cotmanhay site.

Most of that cash will now be used to create the new block, which includes 20 new classrooms, state-of-the-art science labs, an upgraded computer suite, library and new hall.

The building is set to occupy about 40 per cent of the whole school site and will involve demolition of the Cantelupe Building and some temporary classrooms.

The school’s listed buildings, including the King George Gallery will be unaffected.

Principal Tracy Dundas said: “We are very excited at the possibility of the new build – the design is outstanding.”

Designers from Balfour Beattyhave created these artist impressions and architects and Ormiston staff were on hand at an exhibition for parents on Tuesday.

After seeing the plans Tracy Hart, whose daughter starts at the school in September, said: “It’s given me confidence that it’s going to be better than it was before.”

Remaining cash will be used for refurbishment of the former Ilkeston School

The school will next lodge a planning application with Erewash Borough Council for the work.
