Two Ilkeston schools – set to merge on the same site – are in the bottom five in the county for GCSE results, according to league tables released today (Thursday).

Less than a quarter of pupils at Ormiston Enterprise Academy, formerly Bennerley school, gained five good GCSEs – making it the lowest achieving school in Derbyshire.

Last week the Government gave the go-ahead for the school in Cotmanhay to close and merge with Ormiston Ilkeston Academy, formerly Ilkeston school.

The King George Avenue school – which was put in special measures by Ofsted last year – was fourth worst in the county with 38 per cent of its pupils achieving A* to C grades.

The best performing school in the area covered by the Advertiser was independent Michael House School in Shipley, where 91 per cent of pupils made the good grade – making it top in the county.

However only 11 pupils there took the exams.

Another good performer was George Spencer Academy in Stapleford, which was fourth best in Nottinghamshire with 77 per cent.

The best in Ilkeston was St John Houghton Catholic School with 62 per cent.

And Friesland in Sandiacre had a 66 per cent score and the highest performing sixth form in A and AS levels.

Wilsthorpe Community School in Long Eaton had the worst A and AS level scores in the area.

For a more in-depth look at the scores, including comments from Ormiston, see next week’s ‘Tiser out Thursday January 31.
