Mixed reactions to this year’s budget

This week’s budget was described by Chancellor George Osbourne as ‘for people who work hard and aspire to get on.’
But critics have already pointed out that a scheme to help the hard-up get on the property ladder will also benefit millionaires buying second homes.
The budget includes 1p off the price off a pint and a cancellation of the 3p rise in fuel duty.
For hardworking families there will be a childcare subsidy worth £1,200 each year and the government is handing out interest free loans to cover the large deposits needed to secure a mortgage and guarantees for lenders reluctant to offer home loans.
The Advertiser has spoken to several businesses and councillors for their views on this year’s proposals.
Martin Major, Sales Director at Ilkeston’s William West Haulage, said: “We’re buying 70,000 litres of fuel a week - so if it had gone up by 3p you can imagine how much we will save. Fuel represents 35 per cent of our costs so it’s very important that the cost is kept to a minimum.”
Lyn Green, landlady at the White Post pub, Stanley Common, said a penny of the pint was a step in the right direction.
She added: “Most customers say a penny off won’t make any difference but it’s a step in the right direction.
“There needs to be more of a correlation between supermarket and pub prices so people use their local more.
