MP Anna Soubry has criticised Broxtowe Borough Council, claiming that it failed to consult residents fully over plans to close a retirement complex in Stapleford.

The council says pensioners living at Peatfield Court were informed of the plans during two meetings in January.

But the Broxtowe MP says that although informed, the 37 residents were not asked for their views on the proposals.

Broxtowe Borough Council assured the tenants that efforts would be made to re-house them with friends or family or in another scheme.

There are several similar retirement villages within a few miles.

But residents, some of whom are in their 90s, are worried about the move and its consequences.

Ms Soubry said: “Although the residents of Peatfield Court are now receiving a good level of assistance in relation to finding new homes, there is still some confusion surrounding the matter and they rightly feel hurt and let down by the lack of communication they originally received from the council.”

The MP said residents of Peatfield Road, whose homes surround the site, had complained of not being consulted either.

She added: “Peatfield Court residents, mostly elderly and frail, deserve better treatment and need a full explanation as to what is happening to their homes.”

Cllr Milan Radulovic, Broxtowe Borough Council leader, said: “We are disappointed with these comments from the MP which are in fact misleading.”

He said 36 of the residents had already had alternative accommodation earmarked.

Cllr Radulovic added: “We understand that these proposals have a massive impact on the lives of the residents of the Peatfield Court
Retirement Living Scheme and we have done all we can to support the tenants.”
