Museum’s new funding
Ilkeston’s Erewash Museum has won first round support from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help turn the old stables into a new exhibition area.
If it wins second round support and the development goes ahead plans include a cafe and shop, new toilet block, learning room and an events room for the Friends of the Museum.
The first round win means a grant of £39,500 to help pay for professionals such as architects and building consultants to develop the plans and secure second round funding of £400,000 for the new centre.
Manager Helen Martinez said: “We are obviously very pleased because we have been working very hard for a long time.
“If we get phase two funding we will get a three-year post to deliver community and learning activities - it’s a big project for us.
“We have been working with the Friends of the Museum and looking forward to stage two and we’ll hopefully see the plan being realised.”
Helen said if the museum was successful in the stage two funding bid work could begin by the autumn of 2014.
“We’ve got to this point on our own and now we’re hoping the hardest part is over,” she added.
As well as providing the new venue and new opportunities to deliver education in the community, the old stables project will be exhibiting the history of Dalby House - home to Erewash Museum.
Cllr Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s member for culture and leisure, says:
“This centre would be a very valuable addition to our museum and would open up a whole range of new opportunities to showcase local history and to work with schoolchildren and visitors. We are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has given us this initial support.”
