No confidence motion falls at full council

The leader of Erewash Borough Council defended Mayor Jennifer Hulls against a motion of no confidence at a full council meeting.

Cllr Frank Phillips, Labour ward member for Ilkeston Central, alleged at the meeting that Labour members were ignored while waiting to speak .

He accused the Mayor of not calling people in order and claimed Labour members were given less than the obligatory five minutes to make their speech.

But leader Cllr Chris Corbett said: “The Mayor has done an excellent job in sometimes trying circumstances.

“I suspect there are Labour members who have been through the chair themselves who recognise the conscientious way in which she has been very careful in calling opposition members to speak in an even-handed manner.

“We all object when we are not called, but that is the way of things as time sometime gets on. I wonder if this motion is more about putting pressure on the next mayor.” The motion was defeated by 25 votes to 21.
