Old church restoration

Sandiacre folk could soon see one of its historical gems brought back to life if plans to turn it into a private party venue are agreed by Erewash Borough Council.

Springfield Hall, or the former methodist church, was bought three years ago by Ashley Reid and his family and lovingly restored to its former glory.

Work done includes re-sanding its wooden floor, repairing and re-plastering the ceiling and restoring its leaded windows.

Deputy supervisor Ashley said his family planned to hire the hall out for weddings, parties, clubs and associations such as fitness or dancing classes, or even as a rehearsals space for bands.

“We have had a very positive response - the building looks a bit left alone from outside but people are blown away when they get inside.

“Hopefully it will add some interest to the area because there’s nothing around here really.

“It’s been a big job to get this far and on a small budget too.”

The owners are now applying to Erewash Brough Council for a licence to serve alcohol between 10am-12 midnight.

Steve Bilbie, ward councillor for Sandiacre North, said an alcohol licence was fine in principal, but the proper restrictions should be in place.

“From the exterior when you go by and you see them doing aerobics and other activities it looks very attractive,” said Steve.

“I would have thought it would be good but there has to be respect for residents around there.

“The licence should be limited to inside the building with the canal bridge so close and so as not to cause a disturbance to neighbours.”

Full details of the application can be viewed at www.ereswash.gov.uk.
