An Ilkeston park has won a prestigious award for a second year running, recognising it as a ‘high quality park’, among the best in the UK.

Members of staff on Erewash Borough Council’s green space team were this year asked to raise the Green Flag in Victoria Park as a tribute to their hard work which has secured the award for a second year running.

Last year the park became the first park, not just in Ilkeston, but in all of Erewash to winthe award. Other parks in the area which have won the award include Shipley Country Park and Bramcote Hills Park, Stapleford.

Cllr Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s lead member for culture and leisure, said: “We are delighted that Victoria Park has again achieved the Green Flag status, which clearly demonstrates this council’s commitment to high standards.

“It is right that our parks team can celebrate the moment as a thank you for the hard work that goes in to managing, maintaining and improving the park all year round.”

Joining staff at the ceremony on Tuesday was Mayor of Erewash, Cllr Jennifer Hulls.

The Green Flag award is described as ‘the benchmark national standard for parks in England and Wales’ and is presented to high quality parks which have excellent facilities and are well-maintained and well-managed.
