Plan for 33 homes at haulage base
A councillor has praised a plan for 33 houses on the site of a haulage firm and says it is good news for Trowell.
Linda Barratt from family firm Martyn Barratt Transport, of Stapleford Road, says she is hoping to add value to the premises by applying for planning permission for the project.
Cllr Ken Rigby, who represents Trowell at parish, borough and county council levels, says the scheme would help to reduce the number of houses built on Green Belt land, which has been a constant threat to the village in recent years.
“I haven’t seen the site plans in full, but what I have seen appears to be an accessible development on brownfield land,” he said.
“It’s these types of developments that will go a long way to reducing our dependency on building on Green Belt.”
Under Broxtowe Borough Council’s core strategy, Green Belt land around the village, including Trowell Moor, has been earmarked for houses.
Cllr Rigby added that each of the 33 homes would contribute to the parish precept from council tax, which would mean more could be spent on the village. He also feels numbers would be boosted at Trowell Primary School, helping to keep it open.
Any housing development would be subject to a section 106 agreement, which involves a payment to improve services and facilities in the local area. Cllr Rigby says this would also be ‘welcome.’
Mrs Barratt told the Advertiser, however, that plans were at an early outline stage and she was hoping that having planning permission in place would ‘add value’ to the property if they decide to sell and up sticks to new premises locally.
“We are just looking at different options,” she said, making it clear that the company has no plans to fold.
The business, which employs 60 people, has been in the village for just under a decade and owns the land in Stapleford Road. Before that it was based in Long Eaton.
