Police warning over Chaucer parking problems

PARENTS parking outside an Ilkeston infant school are being targeted by police patrols.

Mums and dads on the morning and afternoon school runs at Chaucer Infant School could find a police warning on their windscreen if they have parked illegally outside the school.

Headteacher, Miss Beattie, has given her full support to the police patrols.

She said: "This is really a precautionary thing, it is a problem outside most schools at dropping-off and picking-up time because more people are using cars to get to work after the school run.

"We want to make sure that our pupils are safe at all times. We've had some parents saying they have to walk on the road to get around cars parked on the pavement which is really dangerous.

"As well as the children's safety, a fire engine couldn't get through the other week. Luckily it wasn't responding to an emergency but it could happen when it is."

Parents are permitted to pick up and drop off pupils while pulled over on the white line, but it is illegal to park there.

If a car is parked on the single white line where double white lines run down the middle of the road, motorists can be reported for dangerous parking which could result in a fine, court summons or three points on their licence.

Pc Pamela Hobday said: "We have been at the school in the mornings and at home time to take down the registration of any offending vehicles and to advise parents about safe parking.

"We want people to know that this action is being taken to keep children safe by making sure the road is clear and easy to cross.

"The cars parking on the solid white lines are causing an obstruction and making it difficult for children to cross safely.

"We're asking parents to respect that we're trying to protect children and to find somewhere safe to park that will not obstruct the road."

Officers have not yet handed out any fines or points as they are focusing on bringing the problem to the attention of the parents and preventing them continuing when patrols stop.
