Protests outside town hall tonight
Protesters are due to wave banners and placards tonight (Thursday) against proposals to make benefits claimants pay more council tax.
The protest, led by Derbyshire Anti-cuts, will be in front of Long Eaton Town Hall ahead of a meeting of all Erewash borough councillors at 7pm.
Liz Potter from the campaign group said that they would also be protesting over Little Hallam councillor David Stephenson who has refused to resign over a sick joke he told last month about dead police officers.
Liz said: “The people are being attacked by this Government and those in charge at Erewash Borough Council are following orders, forgetting that it is their duty to protect the people of Erewash and to uphold decent standards of living, equality and social inclusion for all.”
Currently benefits claimants in Erewash are exempt from council tax.
The council is blaming a cut in funding from the Government on the plan to make all benefits claimants pay at least some of their council tax bill.
A public consultation on the plans is due to end on November 2.
“These proposals for council tax support are an attack on the most vulnerable citizens and working families in the borough,” Liz continued.
“We also say we have had enough of nasty Erewash councillors who joke about police officer deaths and do not do the decent thing and resign.”
Liz asked for anyone who wants to support the protest to gather at Long Eaton Town Hall from 6.15pm tonight.
