Stanton plans go on show
Traffic was by far the biggest issue for neighbours as plans for the new 1,950-home Stanton development went on show this week.
The long-awaited plans to re-develop the old ironworks, which include employment space for up to 2,000 workers, leisure facilities and a new primary school, were shown to residents in Stanton-by-Dale and Sandiacre this week.
“Whilst I don’t necessarily disagree with the concept of utilising the land for something rather than leave it derelict,” said villager Steve Huckle. “What nobody has done is determine how traffic can enter and leave the site.”
No new access roads have been drawn in to the plans but there will be alterations to roads in and around the site, including in Nottingham Road in Ilkeston.
Some visitors asked head of planning at Erewash Borough Council Steve Birkinshaw why an extra M1 junction had not been proposed.
“It would cost £50m,” he explained. “That would cost more than everything else on the site put together.”
The plans have been proposed by landowners Saint-Gobain. There is another chance to see them at Sandiacre Town FC today (Tuesday) from 2pm to 7pm and Gladstone Lodge, Ilkeston, on Thursday from 2pm to 7pm.
