Stanton road plan sparks village fury
A TROWELL councillor has vowed that a link road from the proposed Stanton development to the village will only be built 'over his dead body.'
More than 100 angry villagers turned out to discuss plans to fight the plan for the road to link the 3,000-home development of the former ironworks with the A6007 Stapleford Road in Trowell.
Chairing the public meeting in Trowell Parish Hall last Wednesday was Trowell parish and Nottinghamshire county councillor Ken Rigby, who said that he wants to gather signatures from all 2,500 village residents on a petition against the plan.
Cllr Rigby said the road was an example of Erewash 'dumping its rubbish on Trowell' and would mean about 4,000 cars travelling through the village into Nottingham everyday.
He said: "I am actually appalled at this plan."
He said that the site solved problems for Erewash by providing somewhere to build a large number of houses: "That site will get Erewash out of a sticky mess. But I say this road will be built over my dead body,"
In the public exhibition of plans for 'New Stanton' last month, there was a link road from the north-east of the site to join Stapleford Road close to the M1 bridge, which had not been publicly discussed previously.
Other routes had been mooted before the exhibition by developers and site owners Saint-Gobain - including links with the A52 to the south and a link to Toton to the south-east.
Trowell resident Pauline Hughes said: "I'm very concerned. We have to put up a good fight.
"My main concern is for parents and children going to Trowell school under that bridge. It is very narrow and will be very dangerous with increased traffic."
Cllr Rigby added: "The next step is I want to get representatives from every street in Trowell to help me.
"I want to present a proper petition to Nottinghamshire County Council in September with the name of every person that lives in Trowell on it. Then I can use the fact that everybody in the village is behind me over and over again."
Saint-Gobain has said its plans are only a very early stage and it does not expect to lodge a formal planning application with Erewash Borough Council until the autumn.
