Store loses licence for illegal booze sale

An Ilkeston store has lost its licence to sell alcohol, and another in Cotmanhay has had strict conditions put on its licence, after they were caught out in Trading Standards sting operations.

An underage volunteer, sent in by Derbyshire County Council's Trading Standards department to buy booze from Euro Food and Wine, in Bath Street, was served alcohol without being asked for identification, prompting a licence review of the store.

Erewash Borough Council's licensing sub-committee revoked the store's licence at a meeting on Monday, June 22.

The committee also imposed stringent conditions on the Mace Market, in Cotmanhay Road, after the off licence was caught selling to someone under 18.

Each licensee has until Monday to appeal the decision or to surrender their licences.

The stores can continue to sell alcohol during this time but if no appeal is heard, they will have to abide by the licensing committee's decision.

A spokesman from Erewash Borough Council's licensing department said: "The panel heard evidence from Derbyshire Police, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and other partners that had a strong impact on their decision to revoke the licence.

"We can say more after the appeal period is over."

Cllr Carol Hart, county council cabinet member for communities, said: "We will continue to enforce the licensing laws and will seek to suspend or take away licences from those retailers who fail to take their responsibility seriously."

The sting operations at both stores happened in February, but the two stores have remained open and selling alcohol.

No-one was available from either store for a comment.

Under the Licensing Act 2003, it is an offence to sell alcohol to under 18s and retailers who break the laws can face having their premises licence suspended, modififed or removed.
