Teen Beth jetset for Africa

An Ilkeston teenager has embarked on a life-changing trip to the Gambia where she will help build a classroom at a local school.

Nineteen-year-old Beth Grainger flew to Africa last week with the Ilkeston-based charity Every Last Drop.

The not-for-profit organisation supports education and welfare in the West African country and she travelled there last February to help with a number of projects.

She said: “Our work was really varied, I was playing games with the children as well as teaching Art and English. I also helped to build toilets at the school.

“We raised £3,500 to pay for the building materials.

“This time we will be building a new classroom and have raised money to pay for that work. We use fairly basic materials and the local people help us.

“Going out there is so rewarding. The children are so happy even when they’ve just got a crayon to play with. I can’t wait to go.”

The young Ilkeston woman also helps out at Erewash School Sport Partnership, running competitions and devise programmes for sports schemes.

Beth, a former pupil at Kirk Hallam Community College, is now in her first year at Nottingham Trent University, studying Sports Education Development.

Rhian Lilley, of Erewash School Sport Partnership, praised Beth for her determination and great attitude.
