Trader view sought over dire high street

The owners of Ilkeston cafe All Things Nice are hosting a meeting to try and tackle what they see as the town’s dying high street.

Bath Street traders can meet with councillors and each other during the event on March 13 to try and come up with a plan to tempt more business into the town.

Josephine Smith, aspokesman for All Things Nice, said fellow Bath Street business owners were ‘sick’ of the high street’s desolate state.

“We are calling a meeting to get something done about it,” she said.

“We’ve had enough. There is no reason for people to come to Ilkeston whatsoever.

“Why can’t they offer to reduce business rates for the first year.

“But it’s things like gritting as well. You couldn’t get up Lord Haddon Road when it snowed.”

Labour Group leader Alex Phillips and John Frudd, shadow cabinet member for regeneration, will be on-hand to hear traders’ concerns at the cafe from 5pm.

Cllr Alex Phillips, Labour Group leader, said he would be there ‘to listen and to learn.’

He added: “I welcome this exciting new initiative.

“Bath Street traders are victims of an entrenched recession that is tightening its grip and many small businesses
in Erewash are going to the wall.”
