Trowell man gets leading role
A leadning role has gone to a Trowell man in a stage version of The Producers.
Seasoned stage and screen actor Russell Walters, 43, of Derbyshire Avenue, will play eccentric escaped Nazi, Franz Liebkind, played by Will Ferrell in the 2005 Hollywood film version, at the Nottingham Playhouse next month.
The show, presented by Nottingham-based theatre company, Carlton Operatic Society, will be a production of the musical stage version of the Mel Brooks comedy, that debuted in the West End in 2004.
Russell, who has acted since the age of three when he was involved with TV koala puppets Tingha and Tucker in the 1960s, said: "This is possibly the best production I have ever been involved with."
Recently Russell has appeared at the Arts Theatre, Nottingham, in Fiddler on the Roof in 2005 and at the Theatre Royal in 101 Dalmatians, in 2006, alongside Toyah Wilcox.
Lifelong resident of Trowell, Russell said that his theatrical roots were laid by his parents. His mother, Hazel started the Vambria School of Dancing, which had a branch in Ilkeston.
Dad Arthur, who also treads the boards, joined his son in Honk, a musical based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale Ugly Duckling, at the Arts Theatre in 2006 and the pair both played elves in 1985 Hollywood film Santa Claus the Movie.
The Producers began as a 1968 movie before being adapted for the stage and winning a record 12 Tony Awards – Broadway's biggest prizes – in 2001.
The film adaptation starred Nathan Lane, Uma Thurman and Will Ferrell, while the West End version starred Lee Evans.
The show runs from March 3-7 at the Nottingham Playhouse.
