The challenge was clear — ‘do something funny for money’. And the folk of Ilkeston met that head on as they put their heart and soul into raising cash as part of a spectaular Comic Relief.

Schools, residents and businesses across the patch organised a string of events as part of Red Nose Day with the bi-annual extravaganza, which was marking its 25th anniversary, raising a record-breaking £75 million.

The cash will now spread to organisations at home and abroad to help communities and individuals who are less fortunate.

In Ilkeston, youngsters held a Comic Relief football session, dressed up as superheroes and decorated biscuits, while at Ilkeston Town Hall, staff organised a sponsored leg-wax.

On the night of the BBC Comic Relief telethon, BT handled 458,000 calls to the donation line during the live TV show, peaking at 200 calls per second.

Check out our two-page photo spread for a colourful insight into the efforts around Ilkeston.
