VIDEO: Year of the Snake starts in style in Ilkeston town centre

Waiting for Video...

It serpently was a good evening in Ilkeston Market Place on Saturday during Chinese New Year celebrations

The Year of the Snake was brought in with a flurry of colour and dancing as the parade slithered around the town centre.

Pupils from Ladywood Primary School in Kirk Hallam and Ormiston Ilkeston Academy presented their colourful Chinese dragons to the crowds and members of the Cantelupe youth group performed a hypnotic ribbon dance.

During the day there were lantern-making sessions for children at Erewash Museum in High Street.

The Chinese New Year festivities are the finale of Erewash Borough Council’s annual Festival of Light programme, which has featured events including the Harvest Moon in Kirk Hallam, Bonfire Night in Long Eaton and Christmas lights switch-ons in the town centres.

Cllr Mike Wallis, the council’s lead member for culture and leisure said: “This is a wonderfully family-friendly event with a real feelgood factor about it.”
