Girls from across Erewash have been encouraged to get writing by children’s author Helena Pielichaty.

Helena has written more than 30 books, many of which are about girls football including the Girls FC series.

She spoke to pupils from schools across Erewash in a series of sessions organised by Erewash School Sport Partnership in a bid to promote the link between sport and literacy.

Helena talked about how she came up with the characters in her books and helped pupils to act out the plotlines.

She said: “I really want these girls to feel inspired when they go back to their classroom.

“I have always loved reading because it opens up a magical world where you could be a giant slayer or a princess or a queen. That’s what books do and ideas from stories can come from anywhere.”

Rhian Lilley, Erewash School Sport Partnership development manager, said: “Helena’s workshops were great fun and incredibly inspiring for the girls and teachers who attended.

“She really got them thinking about the processes behind creating characters and an interesting plot. Everyone left the sessions feeling excited about reading and writing.”

Alexa Davis-Johnson, ten, is a pupil at Hallam Fields Junior School.

She said: “It was really interesting to hear how Helena thought of the characters in her book. I am reading one of her books at the moment and I love it.”
