A PUPIL at a Kirk Hallam school decided to raise cash for the victims of the Japan earthquake and tsunami by covering a map of the country in coins.

Rhiannon Evans, ten, told teachers at Ladywood Primary School her idea after seeing the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami on TV.

With help from classmates, pupils drew and painted a map of Japan which was then left inthe school hall so people could donate by covering it in coins.

Rhiannon’s idea raised £98 to send to victims in Japan.

Heateacher, Melanie Lawson said: “I’m really proud of Rhiannon for taking the initiative to raise money for such a worthwhile cause.”

The massive earthquake and resulting tsunami struck Japan on March 11.

More than 8,000 people died in the disaster.
