A LIEFLONG Kirk Hallam man has celebrated his 100th birthday this week – and puts his longevity down to looking after himself.

Despite his years Leslie Burrows still gets plenty of exercise at his home at Stanton Hall Nursing Home.

When asked what his secret was, Leslie said: “Mind your own business!

“Just look after yourself, that’s all you can do.”

In his younger years the former Chaucer and Hallcroft pupil was a keen walker and used to cycle three miles a day from his former home in Ladywood Road to work at Stanton Ironworks everyday. He now keeps fit by exercising ever morning.

He moved into Stanton Hall Nursing Home 18 months ago. His wife Edna died several years ago.

The couple had no children but he has a nephew Malcolm Burrows who is 74.

Matron Teresa Swales said: “He is lovely – everybody here loves him.

“He’s very mobile for his age and gets around very well.”
