A metal detector bought by the Ilkeston Community Hospital League of Friends was put to good use on the day it was presented when an Ilkeston child turned up at the minor injuries unit having swallowed a metal object.

Hours after President Eileen Knight handed the new gadget over to Sister Julie Henson (pictured above) it was used to identify the object as a coin and reassure the boy’s parents without a trip to the emergency department.

The boy was sent away and the coin soon re-appeared.
