The George Spencer Academy and Technology College in Stapleford has been selected as a prestigious new maths hub for schools in the area.
George Spencer is one of 32 schools and academy trusts which will lead maths hubs across England and provide a model for schools in their area. The Department of Education also announced £11 million to implement the Asian-style mastery approach to maths which has achieved world-leading success.
This programme will be developed with academics from Shanghai Normal University and the UK’s National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Maths (NCETM). Over the next year, 50 teachers from Shanghai will be placed in the hubs to teach pupils and run masterclasses for other teachers, with lessons shared online.
Anna Soubry, MP for Broxtowe, said: “We know that pupils in Japan, Singapore and China out perform our children in maths. This exciting new approach will give all our youngsters the chance to improve their maths which is a hugely important subject.”
