Anxious student’s exam success

When Nicola Gordon began studying for her GCSEs, she experienced severe anxiety.

It reached the point where she was unable to attend any classes in Year 11 as she would become so anxious.

But on going to get her GCSE results on Thursday (August 21), Nicola is now celebrating a set of fantastic results.

The 15-year-old, who attends Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy, Ilkeston, is over the moon with her grades – A in Media Studies, B in English Literature, C in English Literature, C in Biology, C in French and C in Maths. She also passed her BTEC Art.

“I found it really hard to come to school,” said Nicola. “But the school was really good and helped me. I didn’t think I would do this well.”

As Nicola was struggling to attend classes, teachers decided to help Nicola achieve her goals by working with her in the school’s Success Centre.

This is a small part of the school, run by teaching assistants, to help students who are struggling with anxiety or have behavioural issues.

Tracey Quinney, OIEA’s Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator, said: “Nicola has worked really hard this year with the teaching assistants to make this happen.

“She had found it difficult to come to school but Nicola and her mum communicated well with the school and this meant we were able to work with them to help Nicola get these great results.”

Dave Smith, Principal at Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy, said: “Students require all manner of support through their school careers.

“Luckily, Nicola had the support of her family, friends and members of staff in school to help her achieve these results.

“She has worked incredibly hard to overcome the barriers that could have prevented her achievement.

“We pride ourselves on our Success Centre and the staff within it to provide this additional support when it is needed.”

Pupils at Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy achieved an overall pass rate of 93 per cent of pupils getting five A*-G grades at GCSE and 70 per cent of pupils achieved an A*-C grade in Maths.

Nearly three quarters of students (70 per cent) achieved three levels of progress and 25 per cent achieved four levels of progress in Maths.
