England’s footballing squad will be looking to Ilkeston’s very own Olympic hero Sir Dave Brailsford for inspiration ahead of this summer’s World Cup finals.

The man who has inspired Team GB cyclists at three Olympics has been enlisted by England manager, Roy Hodgson to speak to the players ahead of their friendly against Peru on May 30, their final match before they fly out to Miami and their pre-tournament base before moving on to Brazil.

The manager hopes that Brailsford, who steered Team GB’s cyclists to 30 Olympic medals in Athens, Beijing and London, will boost conviction among the Three Lions squad and encourage them to seize the moment.

Speaking to national media this week Roy Hodgson said: “The world’s full of players who reflect back on tournaments they’ve had thinking they wish they had given a bit more, or concentrated a bit more.

“That’s maybe what Brailsford will speak about before we play Peru at Wembley.” He added: “Maybe Brailsford can put a few thoughts in their heads.”
