An inspirational Ilkeston teenager has lost his brave battle with cancer.

Alex Read, 14, died on March 13 at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

The St John Houghton School pupil was diagnosed with osteosarcoma – a form of bone cancer — on New Year’s Day 2013 and it resulted in him having an arm amputated.

But he showed remarkable courage and amazed doctors, teachers and friends with his strength and willpower.

During his illness he won awards for his bravery and met Prince Harry at an awards ceremony.

When contacted by the Advertiser, Alex’s mum, Shirley, simply said the family are “heartbroken”.
