Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry has launched a petition for Trowell residents fighting the plans for opencast mining at Shortwood Farm.

Ms Soubry said: “I urge everyone in Trowell to sign the petition.

“It supports my request to Eric Pickles to “call in” the decision (to give the go-ahead to mining) taken last month by Notts County Council.”

There are copies in the newsagent’s, Post Office, Festival Inn, parish hall and Dr John Doddy’s surgery in Stapleford.

She added: “We also want to visit every house in Trowell with the petition.”

Nottinghamshire County Council gave permission for the site to be mined in December.

However Mr Pickles, secretary of state for local government and communities, has since halted the process and is considering whether to “call-in” the application. This would mean that the minister could decide on the plans himself and overrule the approval which was given by the county council.

Anyone wanting to get involved in the campaign can do so by emailing Lyn Harley on lyn.harley@ntlworld.com.

Alternatively call Noleen Potts on 0115 9194242.
