Donations from readers helped the Arena food bank hand out lifeline food parcels to Ilkeston residents in need over Christmas as part of the Advertiser’s Feed Our Families campaign.

But the need for tins, packets and jars doesn’t stop when the decorations come down as the New Year can be even busier than the festive period.

David Farnsworth, head of admin at the food bank, explained: “People stretch themselves over Christmas and it’s at the start of the New Year when they realise that they have financial worries.

“Making the first step to come and seek help is a hard one but we’re here to support people and will always do what we can.

“Before Christmas and the Advertiser’s campaign we were running really low on food for the parcels but the campaign really saw a boost in local support.

“Businesses and the community really got behind us and that was a massive boost.

“All we can ask now is that the support continues and the donations keep coming in.”

Hundreds of readers backed the ‘Tiser’s Feed Our Families by dropping off tinned food, packs and jars to the Advertiser office or our designated collection points throughout December.

Now we are urging locals to continue to offer their backing by continuing to make donations. We at the paper will also continue our support.

Editor Martin Hutton said: “Throughout 2014 we will bring you news on the food bank and offer as much assistance as possible.”
