Shop raids have taken place in Stapleford by a task force set up to combat the problem of illegal tobacco products.
More than 90,000 illegal cigarettes with an estimated value of £40,000 were uncovered from nine seperate locations including Stapleford. The haul is currently being investigated.
Nottingham County Council is now investing more than £90,000 of public health funding into investigators and trading standard officers to focus on reducing the supply of such counterfeit and untaxed products.
Chair of Nottinghamshire County Council’s community safety committee Cllr Glynn Gilfoyle, said: “We receive a great deal of information from local people on shops and individuals suspected of selling illicit tobacco which helps us target our enforcement work, this is a priority for the council.”
