A Kirk Hallam school girl has been chosen as this year’s carnival queen.

Emmaleigh Syson, 15, will don the crown for a day as the town celebrates with a procession including floats, marching band and vintage cars through the town centre.

Emmaleigh, a pupil at Kirk Hallam Sports and Technology Community College, will lead the line making their way to the Rutland Sports Park where stalls and stands will await.

Emmaleigh said: “I’m really looking forward to it.

“I sent in a picture and then was told this week that I’d been chosen.”

The carnival organised by the Ilkeston Lions Club, this year takes place on Saturday June 14.

The parade will set off from Enfield Street at 12.30pm.

Stalls will be open at the Rutland Sports Ground from 12 noon.

Activities for all the family will be on offer at the carnival ground.

In the arena there will be performances by The Militaires, Flying Dakos, The Almanacs, and the Dance Divaz.

There will also be the usual tug of war competition throughout the afternoon.

Teams of five can enter on the day, to battle it out for the prize of £50.
