Error sparks parking ticket confusion

Motorists were left confused after a council announced that parking tickets were transferable between its car parks in Ilkeston - only to then reveal the scheme has not yet been finalised.

Erewash Borough Council widely promoted the new scheme, including on their website and in their magazine EBC Today, before realising what a spokesman described as an ‘error’ and changing the online article.

A Traffic Regulation Order currently in place actually makes the transfer of tickets between car parks illegal.

Labour councillor Michelle Booth was told of themix-up by a resident who checked the new rules with a parking attendant.

She said: “Thousands of EBC Today magazines have dropped through people’s letterboxes.

“The magazine is misinforming the Erewash public. I am keen to hear how the council will react to people who receive a ticket as a result of their error and I hope that the council will treat people favourably who fall foul of this regulation as a result of their own misleading statements.”

A scheme which has seen the number of free 30-minute parking bays double has been described as a success by the council.

A spokesman for Erewash Borough Council said: “As soon as the error was pointed out to us it was corrected.

“The article should have included the words later this year.

“We changed our website and updated the digital magazine.

“In the next edition of EBC Today, which is out in June, there will be further information for residents.

“Rules about transferable tickets will go before the council executive on Thursday June 19.”
