Fears community group will have to give up home

The Stapleford Community Group says it fears for the future — after discovering proposals that would see it lose its home.

The organisation base is at Montrose Court Community Centre, which has been a venue for popular fundraising and entertainment events, which have engaged with residents.

So successful has the group’s work been, it approached owner Broxtowe Borough Council to ask if it could take over the running of the community centre full-time and was told to apply for a grant aid.

The proposal was due to be discussed by the council’s cabinet at a meeting on March 12. However, the item was removed from the agenda.

Days later, the council contacted group chairman Richard MacRae to tell him of plans to move Broxtowe Play Forum into the centre in place of the community group.

This has sparked fears the group’s work to improve the Stapleford North ward won’t be able to continue.

Richard said: “The move would mean it would no longer be a community centre. While we support the play forum, Montrose Court has become the hub of this ward.

“People who used to stay away are coming back and events we’ve put on have helped with this.”

Over recent months, the group has employed the Community Payback Service to repaint railings surrounding the building, local police have also used the centre for monthly drop-ins.

The group is now in talks with the council in hopes of keeping the centre as their base, with wider support from local MP Anna Soubry.
