Ilkeston is gearing up to revel in a football fiesta as the World Cup in Brazil kicks off today (Thursday June 12).
Flags of St George have started to crop up all over town and pubs are preparing to be packed out for England’s first game on Saturday night in Manaus on the outskirts of the rainforest.
The Three Lions take on Italy in Group D at 11pm (GMT) with fans planning a big night on the town to see Roy Hodgson’s side in their first outing.
Insp Nick Daines, in charge of policing in Ilkeston, told the ‘Tiser the force wants fans to enjoy the tournament but issued a warning.
He said: “I know how much the beautiful game means to people.
“Sadly, some people lose control, with drunkenness and domestic violence high on the agenda.
“We don’t tolerate either. Enjoy the games, but please be sensible, and remember, nothing justifies hitting a partner.”
Pubs are expecting big crowds to turn out and watch the games.
Gaige, bar supervisor at the Charter, said: “The games will be shown on the big screen and we’ve got the pub all decked out with flags and decorations so we’re expecting to busy for all the games but especially when England are in action.”
l Send us your England selfies. Throughout the tournament we want to see England (and other) fans flying the flag.
Take a snap of yourself with the St George flag and send it in to us here at the ‘Tiser.
Or get the face paint out and get the kids involved or stick a hat on the dog. However it is, we want to see how you are celebrating.
Send your snaps to firstname.lastname@example.org, tweet @IlkestonTiser or upload your photo to Facebook.
