Free short-stay parking bays are set to double next week as part of a regeneration programme to bring more visitors into Ilkeston.
Erewash Borough Council will provide 75 free 30-minute parking spaces across six Ilkeston car parks while Ilkeston’s Baker Street, Queen Street and Station Road car parks will transform from ‘pay and display’ into short stay bays only.
Lower Bath Street car park will also become a ‘pay and display’ with two free half hour bays as requested by shopkeepers.
Drivers parking in the 30 minute bays must still obtain tickets from machines to display in their vehicle.
The new scheme also allows the transfer of parking tickets between council car parks, however this won’t be in place until later this year.
Lead member for the environment, Councillor Barbara Harrison, said:“We have worked hard to be able to fund this scheme which is a crucial element in our on-going campaign to support our town centres.”
