A special school in Ilkeston has been awarded a £1,500 grant from Toyota to put towards the development of a new and challenging playground.
Bennerley Fields Specialist Speech and Language College, in Stratford Street, Ilkeston, is trying to raise around £125,000 for their new key stage two playground.
The project will include an accessible roundabout for wheelchairs, a zip wire, storytelling chair and a six-metre climbing net.
The Toyota Fund For a Better Tomorrow allows Toyota dealers to apply for funding of up to £2,000 for local community projects.
Adam Lyons, of Ron Brooks Toyota, Ilkeston, put the school forward for the grant and presented them with a cheque on July 21.
He said: “We are extremely happy to have been able to obtain this funding and hope that it can be used to strengthen the support for funding the current projects which will enhance the pupils’ daily activities and the community.”
School business manager, Abigail Evans, said the project is not just something for pupils and is to be shared by the whole of the local area for summer schools and events.
“The beauty of it is that we can buy each item of equipment individually,” she said.
“We’re putting it together piece by piece.”
