In just over a week two Ilkeston runners will join thousands at the start line of this year’s London Marathon.
Chris Chambers and Jim Whelan have teamed up to raise cash for the Ilkeston based social inclusion charity P3. As they raise more and more cash, they promise to dye their hair and beards increasingly crazy colours.
Chris, 39, has run the marathon for P3 before and his wife Helen works for the charity.
He explained: “People watch shows like Benefits Street and think that people claiming benefits are all the same but that’s not the case.
“P3 is a brilliant charity and in light of funding cuts announced lately then any support they can get is even more greatly received. I was pretty slow last time I ran it and a lot heavier as well so hopefully this time I’ll be better prepared and a bit quicker too.”
Jim Whelan, 38, owner of The Jim, on Bath Street, has also completed the gruelling 26 mile course around the capital before.
He said: “On the day it’s amazing, there’s no way you can’t get through it because the atmosphere is that good.
“P3 is a really deserving cause so I’m more than happy to be helping raise cash for them by doing the marathon.”
Chris added: “The one thing I remember more than anything from last time is the support from the crowd.
“It’s a great atmosphere and that really spurs you on.” To sponsor Chris and Jim visit www.justgiving.com/Chris-Chambers2014
