A young entrepreneur, now working on the third edition of a youth magazine he set up last year, has scooped a prestigious honour.
Ashley Allen was whisked off to London for three days earlier this year to be given the Youth Media of The Month accolade and interviewed by the Youth Media Agency.
The coveted prize is usually handed out to much bigger publications than Avenue Magazine, which the 24-year-old creates from his Cotmanhay bedroom.
“It was amazing,” he said.
“The fact that they’re giving the magazine the same award that bigger publications have won is just great exposure for Avenue Mag.”
He explained that the previous month’s winner had been LIFE Magazine, which is one of the biggest youth publications in the UK, selling 50,000 copies a month.
Ashley is hoping to sell just 1,000 copies from outlets around Ilkeston, Derby and Nottingham.
The magazine has also been listed on lifestyle magazine Vice’s website under a list of publications and blogs it recommends.
Ashley, who still holds down a full-time job at a Cotmanhay engineering firm, is hoping to branch out and secure an office in town to work from.
He also has ambitions of offering work experience to students and budding journalists from Ilkeston and the wider area.
