Up to 85 homes could be built at the site of a former manufacturing site in Ilkeston.
Outline plans have been submitted to Erewash Borough Council by Gardner Group Ltd to build the houses at the Gardner Aerospace site in Cotmanhay Road.
The company relocated to a new purpose built factory in Derby in 2011. Only a small number of security and maintenance staff now remain on site.
In their application the company claims that the overall principle of the development is to provide a high quality, sustainable residential development on a brownfield site.
They say the development will also contribute to the council’s housing delivery requirements.
The Erewash core strategy states a housing requirement of 6,250 new homes to be provided within Erewash in the next 14 years.
John Allen, vice-chairman of Action for Cotmanhay, said: “I am not in favour of the plans. I don’t think there would be enough room for more children at the schools, plus there will be extra traffic. I would like to see the building split in to units to develop into businesses.”
The site was the subject of a previous planning application for up to 70 houses which was rejected in May last year. A planning appeal was subsequently held in January but was rejected.
The planning board will discuss the application next month.
