An Ilkeston man has been sentenced to 18 weeks in prison for stealing booze and cheese.

On Wednesday November 27, Lee Chatfield tried to steal the items from B and M Bargains but the manager recognised him thanks to the town’s ShopWatch scheme.

37-year-old Chatfield was escorted to the back of the store where he damaged other goods in his attempt to escape before being arrested, charged and remanded.

Chatfield of Market Street, Ilkeston appeared before Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court on Thursday November 28 and pleaded guilty to theft, he received 18 weeks for shoplifting.

The scheme links retailers via radios to each other and police allowing them to share information on suspicious behaviour or incidents of crime as they happen.

Pc Chris Hamilton said: “ShopWatch is a really helpful tool in helping us tackle shoplifting in this area and the scheme is proving to have positive results for shopkeepers in Ilkeston.”
