A local group for leukamia and lymphoma research which was formed almost 50 years ago is urging people to get involved in their annual nine-mile sponsored walk, which has raised £270,000.
The event, which originally started out as a 25-mile sponsored walk, has now been reduced to nine and covers a circular route around, Ilkeston, Cossall and Stapleford.
Chairman Keith Brown and secretary Diane Jones, of the Bramote and District sub-branch of the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research group, have gone on to raise more than £270,000 from the annual sponsored event which this year will take place on Saturday, May 10.
The branch’s chief advisors Phil Harvey,88, and his wife Sybil,90, joined the group in 1976 and also take part in the annual walk.
They said: “Most involved with our group have had their lives transformed by the effects of leukaemia and lymphoma related illnesses which have claimed lives of loved ones, including our son.”
Diane said: “Our most successful year was 1984 when we raised more than £10,000 from the walk.”
“This year new walkers and those who have taken part are welcome to participate.”
